Only one more day in the hometown! One more shift at work, and no more friends to say goodbye to, since I stopped off at Karlee's birthday party before coming home (she had a Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake, which was too amazing for words). I'm definitely going to miss working with her, we had us some hilarious times; she's also a wonderful girl, so thoughtful and funny and sweet. I was also glad to have someone else who understood the awesomeness of 'Raisins.'

I had dinner last night at Erica's to say goodbye to people and to hang out with her: we talked about Ratanadawong, who is already out in British Columbia and who was apparently surfing the internet all day.
Scene 1
RATANADAWONG: Do you want a piano?
ERICA: What?
RATANADAWONG: I found a free piano. Like, a real one. But we would have to pick it up in Coquitlam.
ERICA: No.

Scene 2
RATANADAWONG: So I found this really awesome black leather couch, can we get it?
ERICA: No.
RATANADAWONG: But it's a BLACK LEATHER-
ERICA: No.

Scene 3
RATANADAWONG: I bought a fishnet!
ERICA: ... why.
RATANADAWONG: To decorate our bedroom with!
ERICA: No.

Scene 4
ERICA'S MOM: I think he's nesting.

Which he totally was, and it was completely adorable, even from long-distance. They seem so excited to be living together, and I'm so happy for them, I'm sure they'll have an amazing time (even if Ratanadawong's next suggestion was a bread maker - so Erica could make bread). They're definitely two of the people I'm going to miss most during the year: we've only really spent the last two summers getting close, but they're so completely wonderful I feel as though all I want to do is get to know them better.

I also got to know Erica's sisters better this summer: all three of them are astoundingly drop-dead gorgeous (as the Tempest headshots can only begin to hint at), and brilliant beyond belief. All three are insanely artistic and beautiful and wise, all with the exact same mannerisms and laughs - sometimes it's just not fair. Ariel used to live in Ottawa, but moved - alas, no hanging-out this year, but she's another person I'd really like to get to know. As I was hugging her goodbye, she said "I get a Miranda hug!" Which makes no sense, since as Miranda I didn't hug anyone, but she always points out things I do IRL that carried over from the play, like my fist-clenching when I get mock-angry at people (...what? I don't get mad at people, I don't know how to pretend to be mad! lol).

Linkage!
-The Mannahatta Project: there's an article in the latest National Geographic, but it's a project to see what Manhattan looked like in 1609, when it was discovered. You can enter in any street address in NYC and it will show you what was there four hundred years ago.
-The great (forever) white north: oh, Canada. Though I love thee, I must confess I agree rather a lot, and was recently having a conversation with a few people that reminded me very much about this post. (I've been madly trying to scramble along IBARW posts, and if anyone has a favourite I would love to read it, as there are rather a lot of links.)
-How the average U.S. consumer spends their paycheque: I don't know what the equivalent is for Canada, though I'd wager we spend a bit more on transportation and housing (and, uh, less on healthcare).
-Teach a kid to argue: I am so doing this.

Also, this. This makes me so incredibly happy. I'm going to have it, like, engraved on my forehead. So much love for the random internets right now. <3

PS Apparently Imogen Heap was in the area on the weekend, playing with Hawkesly Workman? AND I *MISSED* IT?!?!??! HOW OFTEN DOES IMOGEN FREAKING HEAP COME HERE AND HOW RANDOM A PAIRING IS IMOGEN HEAP AND HAWKESLY WORKMAN AND I HAD NO IDEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAA D: D: D:

PPS ... guys? I really want to be an English major. I'm talking and thinking and reading about Shakespeare and English teachers and latin american folktales and thinking about how my little sister wants to be an English major and how awesome her poems are and how many cool courses she's going to get to take (like, CHILDREN'S LIT? THE BIBLE AS LIT? ARTHURIAN MYTHS? JACOBEAN SHAKESPEARE? JOHN FREAKING DONNE? WTF WHY AM I NOT AN ENGLISH MAJOR). I know why I'm not, but still. I kind of really want to be.

... I just really like books.

Four Inches
*chairs on cliffs*
[info]mcollinknight
Cancer (June 22-July 22): The stars apologize for last week's prediction of untold fame and fortune. They keep forgetting that you actually believe in this crap.
-------------
First OoB: It snowed four inches in my hometown yesterday.

Bwahahahahaha, suckers!! Though it's supposed to snow in the O-town next week :( That is my family's new puppy, and it's the first time he has ever encountered snow.

Canada, you are MESSED IN THE HEAD. I'm not ready for winter yet - I love winter, but I'm having way too much fun with fall. Today it was raining and windy, so the leaves were still blowing wetly off the trees and racing madly through the air to stick to things like lampshades and cars and my legs.

Second OoB: I got back two midterms... History and French. The French is about what I was expecting, and it was really helpful to know what her marking style is, since it's not one that suits me and my style of bulsh*tting all over the place. I got heavily marked-down for not having a conclusion (even though in each case the conclusion was in a separate paragraph, followed conclusion style, restated points, etc.) because she LITERALLY needs it to say "In conclusion, ABC." I was answering them like essay questions, in my preferred style of personal essay (they were personal questions), but I guess I wasn't stating the points in a direct enough manner, so I know what to fix for next time. *shrug*

History, though... I'm kind of disappointed. I got 32.5/50 on the essay!!1! After re-reading it, I did leave things out and I could have been stronger, but not TWENTY FREAKING POINTS stronger. I mean, that's like a 60%. I'm going to go talk to the TA just to have them explain their marking process mark-by-mark, because there are no x's or remarks besides the one at the end, so I want to know how they calculated down to the .5 and perhaps if I see what they wanted me to say or what more I could have done then I'll understand... I mean, I don't think it's worth an appeal to the prof, though he HAS been stressing for the past three classes that if we have an issue then he's more than happy to look it over and that he's always done so and it usually results in a raising of the mark, but I don't know... I mean, it's not that big of a deal, I don't want to raise a fuss over it. I'm not sure.

Also, after all that Arabic cramming, she didn't even put the new vocab on the midterm. I was done in TWENTY MINUTES. Awesome.

Third OoB: I had about a two-hour mini panic session/period of moroseness this afternoon wherein I was feeling supremely unprepared for university and things in general. I want to be involved, but I'm lost and I don't know how to dive headfirst into something anymore. I know I have to start kicking the sh*t out of life, but I feel like I'm suddenly not quite enough of a person to do so. I'm not expecting enough of myself in quite a few areas - and I don't know how to jump-start it again.
*ahem*
I'm done, I assure you.

Addendums: I GET TO GO SEE FEIST IN CONCERT ON SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FEIST! I'm excited.
-I talked to my mother, who basically told me she's taking me shopping when my family comes to visit. Can you say SCORE? I can. And I do.
-I want to see my friends.
-Why am I out of ice cream AGAIN?

A Weekend in Pairs of Likes and Dislikes.

Two Things That Made Me Happy:
1. Sam came by the Toy Store on Saturday to surprise me and gave me a big hug.
2. I found and edited a story to use for the CBC Literary Awards. Not sure if it could win, but it's not too bad.

Two Things That Made Me Unhappy:
1. Not getting to hang out and do fun things with Jaden.
2. Saying goodbye to Polly.

Two Things I Love Doing That I Got To Do:
1. I love filling out applications. I like knowing all the information, and where to put it. My name, my age, my parents' occupations, my birthday... I just get an incredible amount of happiness from filling in forms. This is probably why I make nonsense lists when I'm bored. I like writing down things about myself.
2. Pulling hair out of things. Specifically stuffed animals. Now, I only like pulling out the hairs that are loose. I amused myself in the Toy Store by picking loose bits of fluff out of a Unicorn's Tail and a Monster's Ear. I also found a burr on my own dog. I was delighted; she was not.

Two Things I Don't Like Doing So Much But Had to Do Anyway:
1. Being forced to do things I'd rather not. Being made to work all weekend falls under this category. I specifically detest not being able to stick up for myself.
2.  Asking people for favours/money. Fundraising falls under this category; I asked my neighbours if they wanted to buy some magazines, and they couldn't find any they wanted to buy. Now, I love my neighbours, but I don't like going to see someone for the express purpose of getting money out of them. I guess that's the shy, squeamish side of me. Did I spell that right?

Two Decisions I've Made:
1. I'm going to take a Minor in English so that I can take the Publisher/Editor route if I want to.
2. Applying to Guelph. They've got good food and a nice city, from what I hear. And this will make me feel smarter applying.

Two Decisions Yet to Be Finalised:
1. Whether to actually apply to Columbia and do the SATs. I just have a really horrible feeling it's not going to be worth the trouble and I'm going to be let down and disappointed.
2. Whether I should ask for a raise or not. My mater-unit's been pushing me to do so, and I'm still feeling rankled because of Lark being paid more than me; it's the store's two-year anniversary next weekend, which would be the opportune time since I've worked there for two years and I'm due, but this goes along with the asking-people-for-money thing.

Dark Bunny had been on antibiotics for a week now, but she says she's not sick anymore. But she still doesn't feel well. She was sort of stumbling around, and she said she felt "passy-outy". She had brought lemonade with her, and reminded me of the time she wrote "limonade" on my Facebook wall because the French side was facing out. She and I deciphered an entire packing list in French, not that it was that hard. Dark Bunny took French in University but she says she doesn't know French because it was an open-book online course.

Dark Bunny says Jake calles her modest, but sarcastically. She was going to eat her favourite meal tonight, which Rosaline introduced to them. It's potatoes and vegetables and noodles on thin slices of pork. I said "What about lasagna?" and she paused, saying "I forgot about the lasagna..." The other day, she said she wanted to find a cold hole and die in it.

She had written a step-by-step guide to closing, and I read it through. At the end she had written "you are done. GO HOME!!!" and someone had written 'hehe' beneath and we were trying to figure out who. Dark Bunny passed the Exacto to me (when she could remember what it was called) and told me the blade was open. We cut up boxes and stickered things. She kept telling me to "Shhhhh". Finally, she said "Shut up, Clare" when she was doing somthing. We beat Rolly because we put boxes behind the counter just to get them out of the way. She bet me the Schliech boxes would come in that day, but they hadn't by the time I left.

By the time I left, Dark Bunny had told me that Facebook pets don't like all kinds of food. She kept telling me she liked the songs on the radio.

Cinema
*chairs on cliffs*
[info]mcollinknight

I'm fairly certain there's chocolate in my iPod headphones. Wow, you know you're in Belgium when... ? Although it happened in France.

And that leads me to my next point: that French movies are awesome.

I'm not an expert on the subject, and I haven't seen very many, but I can say that I'm curious to see more (see Danse avec Lui). I think that while Hollywood makes me full of happy what with costumes and effects and the occasional good movie, French cinema just has something that the US can't match: charm. The French movies I've seen so far have all had a certain air to them - of intelligence perhaps, or of storytelling.

Spoilers for 'Le Dernier Tunnel' )Spoilers for Amelie )Spoilers for Ensemble, C'est Tout )Spoilers for Asterix et Obelix: Mission Cleopatre )

I need to watch more French movies. Sorry for bothering you all. Good night!

List II

The Customers I Dislike:

1. The kid who follows you around asking, "What does that do? What does that do?"
2. The person who continuously asks how much something costs. There are price tags. Read. Please.
3. The people who buy $3.95 items every 4 minutes, deciding there's just 'one more thing'. With DEBIT.
4. The stupid college kids who should know better. They touch everything, and swear rather loudly.
5. The parents who don't notice their kids trashing the place.
6. The customers who ask for help and then spend the whole time being 'holier than thou'.
7. The praying mantis wives with wedges, tight shirts and obvious lipliner who use their rich husbands' charge cards to buy crap - junk - for their kids, just because they can.
8. The people who get to the front of the line for the cash and then can't make up their minds.
9. The cranky old ladies. Because there are just so many of them.
10. The people who want a bag. For something that already has handles.

The Customers I Like:

1. Anyone shopping for anything in the baby section.
2. The young mothers. They're always so nice.
3. The English guys who come in to play with the puppets.
4. Anyone who has something even remotely interesting to say on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
5. The dads who come in with one their kids. For some unexplainable reason, Dark Bunny (and now me) are very attracted to them.
6. The old grandfathers who look at the toy tractors wistfully while their relatives hurry them along. They're so sweet.
7. People that are easy to help and appreciate the effort.
8. Those that offer to pay for the free giftwrapping.

'Cause y'all know I'm such a copycat

Inspired by [info]jessica_june and that lady from Ellen. Although I don't think Ellen is going to help me on this one. Things to do before I am 21:

  1. See a football game in England (don't think that's actually going to happen, btw. It's only on here 'cause it'd be cool).
  2. Solo-paddle the entire length of my lake at my cottage before anyone wakes up.
  3. Finish a story.
  4. Learn to whistle.
  5. Sing something in public.
  6. Kiss someone (this had better happen or I am going to be one sad twenty-one year old).
  7. Travel by train across Canada.
  8. Have at least one wild and crazy night. The kind you don't tell your mother about.
  9. Not eat at fast-food places. Instead frequen the sort of places where they don't do takeout and serve coffee in mugs, not cups. And where the guy who owns it knows everyone in town. Those are neat places.
  10. Get own record player.
  11. Climb a really tall tree.
  12. Get up my nerve to say something if I really like someone. (yeah, most likely not happening either)
  13. Dress up for Halloween.
  14. Go to Germany.
  15. Have a philosophical conversation with someone in a bar.
  16. Learn how to make drinks.
  17. See a tiger.
  18. Go to a concert.
  19. Learn to speak at least two other languages.
  20. Scream really, really loudly
  21. Play with dolls.

P.S. This is so not as good as yours, Jaden.

'Admit Impediments'

[info]mcollinknight

It is a Snow Day which consists mostly of snow melting around me. But of course I am at school (me being me), fiddling around with my LJ and doing other delightful things while in the company of Jaden, who happens to equal (=) win. Also, the_lj_reboot is awesome, as I can make my LJ even more prettiful. I dont' have much to say, other than that I probably ate too much for lunch. Also, I'm really, really hoping that Persephone will show up, because I know we all miss and love Persephone. Speaking of which, Seahorse: We need to decide which day the Fearsome Film Foursome (+Persephone) is going to le city to see a movie and then we need to speak to Persephone' pater-unit. Should we get your mater-unit to do that? It's hard to figure out when he's actually home, because he works all the time, but we can't just abduct her (tempting though it may be). Plans, anyone?
And I dont' know if these are still in theatres or not, but we could see one of those movies that won Oscars. Like Crash. Or Syriana. Or Munich. Or Good Night, and Good Luck. George Clooney = win.
I have seen Jaden's pullips, and they are le gorgeous. I am off to brainstorm a good birthday gift for Jaden.

S'mores
*chairs on cliffs*
[info]mcollinknight

Alas, alack, another Snow Day and I am at school (again). Why does this always seem to be happening to me? I was thinking I could get my Spring on the Oxtongue River painting finished, but le teacher d'Art may not even be in.

Dinner last night was really good: there's something to be said for really good pork. And 'brain' as my sister Yaden calls it (which is cauliflower with cheese sauce) and s'more ice cream for dessert, which doesn't taste like s'mores but which is pretty good anyway.

At least I got my exchange form signed and my transcript so I can go on the exchange. To paraphrase Jaden, "WOOT My owl in the hood YO". That felt good.

I have another story, and hopefully I'll get some comments or replies on this one (at least from my friends). Not that I like it. I just wanted to put it on to demonstrate my superior technical abilities. So there *sticks out tongue*
